Our Story
Morocco has always been a destination close to our hearts. During our first date, Stacey and I realized that we shared the dream of visiting Casablanca someday.
A year into our relationship, I was ready to propose to Stacey. And without a doubt, I knew where I was going to propose to her. I began planning our trip to Morocco but unfortunately encountered many hindrances along the way - from being offered run-of-the-mill, one-size-fits-all itineraries to travel companies who weren't willing to customize the itinerary according to my preference. Nonetheless, we eventually made it to Morocco, where we experienced some difficulties on the very first day of our trip. But the next day, we met Mustapha, our travel guide, and from then on, we were relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed our trip.
Mustapha listened to us, heard our expectations, and anticipated our needs even before we realized them. During that trip, I shared with Mustapha that I was planning a surprise for Stacey and wanted to propose to ask her to marry me! Mustapha began planning an unforgettable evening in the desert, where I proposed to Stacey. It was magical - with dinner under the clear desert sky, surrounded by lamps in a heart shape, a delicious dinner, and with the ring inside an Alladin's lamp. Stacey was surprised, and I became the luckiest man ever!
Our trip continued to be a magical adventure filled with genuine experiences and lovely hospitality. Our guides and hosts taught us more about the people of Morocco throughout our journey. It was indeed a unique experience. Unfortunately, during that trip, we realized we had paid a lot more than what the trip should cost. What was even more disheartening was to learn that our guides and the local community were not receiving much of what we had paid.
Our experiences from this trip, the inequities that we became aware of, and learning of the plight of divorced women and their children motivated us to begin working on a solution with Mustapha. Together with Mustapha, we began Enlightened Connections in 2023. We created Enlightened Connections so we can create authentic experiences at low cost while committing to supporting the local communities, especially single mothers and their children. Today, we are proud to say, that our team at Enlightened Connections offers customized and immersive travel experiences at a competitive pricing while sharing 20% of our profits with the local community.

Chief Gets It Done Officer (COO)
Mustapha El Fertass Hi, I'm Mustapha! Born into a nomadic heritage, my life has been shaped by a love for exploration and cultural exchange.
Growing up as a nomad, I started my journey early by guiding and assisting travelers through the desert. These experiences sparked my lifelong passion for connecting with people from around the globe and learning their stories. Years later, I moved to the vibrant city of Marrakech, where I spent over 12 incredible years as a driver, crisscrossing Morocco and discovering the endless beauty and diversity of this amazing country. Along the way, I gained a deep understanding of Morocco's stunning landscapes, rich traditions, and warm hospitality—insights I now love sharing with others. Fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, and English (thanks to life and lots of conversations!), I've dedicated my career to creating meaningful and unforgettable experiences for travelers. Whether it's uncovering hidden gems or diving into Morocco's culture, I'm here to make every journey unforgettable. Let's explore together!

Stacey Schayer-Nag, DSW, LCSW Hello! I am Stacey, the CEO and co-founder of Enlightened Connections.
I'm a licensed clinical social worker who has held various positions over the last 30+ years. Most recently, I have been contracted by Native American Tribes in Oregon to work with their Education and Behavioral Health Departments. I also do telehealth therapy for adults and children and volunteer at an equine therapy program in St. Charles, Illinois. Three years ago, I took my first trip to Morocco and fell in love with the culture, land, and people. My husband and co-founder of Enlightened Connections proposed to me in the Agafy Desert at a luxurious camp. Our tour guide and driver, Mustapha, EC's Moroccan expert, provided us with individualized experiences that no one else offered in Morocco. After several days with Mustapha, we decided to support his efforts on a journey to start a travel agency that would bring people to Morocco and connect them with its culture, beauty, and, most importantly, its people. Mustapha shared his experiences living in the desert with single mothers who cannot afford their children's food, education, and medical care. We agreed that a portion of all the proceeds would go directly to the women and their children. We offer our customers the opportunity to bring the money and hand it to the women themselves while spending time with the families, drinking tea, playing with the children, and breathing in the fresh, warm air of the desert. We offer unique excursions and experiences that no other agency offers. My wife, Stacey, and our wonderful family of kids and grandkids would like to welcome you to journey with us to Morocco! I am a practicing Pediatrician living in Chicago who loves caring for kids and their families. I grew up on three continents (Asia, Africa, and the US) and have travelled to five of the seven continents for work and vacation! Morocco is one of the most beautiful places I have visited in my travels. The people are so friendly; they go out of their way to ensure you have a fantastic experience. In your journey with us, I promise you will be taken beyond all the usual sights, sounds, and tastes of what others can provide.
